US continues to aid Ukraine, but this time… EU pays?
On July 14, US President Donald Trump surprised the market when he announced will provide Patriot air defense missile systems to Ukraine, But costs paid by the European Union.
Trump said as he left New Jersey:
“For us, this is a business deal. They (Ukraine) need Patriots, and the EU will pay.”
This move is in stark contrast to his previously stated “no aid” stance. At the same time, Trump continued to criticize Russian President Putin:
“He (Putin) talks very well, but at night he bombs everywhere. I don't like this.”
US-EU-Mexico trade tensions escalate
On the same day, The White House confirmed that the US will impose 30% tariffs on goods from the EU and Mexico from August 1, 2025..
Economic advisers warn that the massive tariffs would spark a wave of retaliation, straining global supply chains. The EU has also declared its readiness to respond accordingly.
“If the US attacks with tariffs, the EU will respond,” a senior EU official told Reuters.
